Choral Music
The Choral Music Program at MHS has an ensemble for every student, from kids who love to sing in the shower to those with professional training. The program’s mission is to provide young singers the opportunity to experience musical excellence through a performance-based program that teaches musical skills through a sacred and secular choral repertoire. Students learn performance techniques and musical literacy from director Amy Loch as they perform in the school’s four ensembles: The Middle School Concert Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble open to any student in grades 6-8 interested in choral singing. Concert Choir provides a place for students to learn the foundation of skills needed for choral music. Students will study a varied repertoire of choral literature representing different historical periods, styles, and cultures. This course is an introduction to choral singing, performance techniques, and music literacy. This ensemble will perform at several school concerts and participate in at least one choral clinic or festival. Select Girls Chorus is an auditioned ensemble for females in grades 7-8. It is strongly suggested that students enroll in Concert Choir as a 6th grade student if they are interested in auditioning for Select Girls Chorus in grades 7 or 8. Emphasis will be placed on characteristics unique to women’s singing. Students will study a varied repertoire of choral literature representing different historical periods, styles, and cultures. This course is a study of women’s choral singing, performance techniques, and music literacy. This ensemble will perform in several school concerts and participate in at least one choral clinic or festival. The High School Chorale is a large ensemble open to students in grades 9-12 interested in choral singing. Students will study a varied repertoire of choral literature representing different historical periods, styles, and cultures. This course is a study of advanced choral singing, performance techniques, and music literacy. This ensemble will perform in several school concerts, festivals, and clinics. The Chamber Singers is an
advanced auditioned ensemble for students in grades 9-12. Students may
receive college credit for this course through SMC. Students are
expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment to preparation of
music outside of class time as well as after school rehearsals and
performances. Students will study a varied repertoire of choral
literature representing different historical periods, styles, and
cultures with an emphasis in a cappella singing. Chamber Singers will
perform in school concerts, festivals, clinics, and community
performances. All five of the MHS ensembles have distinguished themselves in competition; winning many first place awards, “superior” ratings, and commendations. The High School Concert Chorale has also toured extensively, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Vatican on past tours. MHS audiences have the opportunity to hear our award-winning choirs in performance several times each year: at the annual fundraising concert in the fall; at the choirs’ annual Winter and Spring concerts; and at the SMMUSD “Stairway To The Stars” concert held each spring at the Santa Monica Civic Center. The High School Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers also collaborate with the Instrumental Music Department in an annual Masterworks concert. |
